Prof. Dr. Azize M. ÖZGÜVEN

Prof. Dr. Azize M. ÖZGÜVEN completed her undergraduate studies in English Language and Literature at Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters in 1965, and her PhD in 1975. She began her academic career in 1981 as an Assistant Professor. She received the title of Associate Professor in 1987 and became a Professor in 1995. Throughout her years at the university, she supervised many valuable faculty members—including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nilsen Gökçen Uluk, Asst. Prof. Dr. Leman Giresunlu, Asst. Prof. Dr. Füsun Çoban Döşkaya, Asst. Prof. Dr. Evrim Ersöz Koç, and Lecturer Hakan Dibel from the Department of American Culture and Literature at Dokuz Eylül University—for their MA and/or PhD theses. During her academic career, she conducted extensive studies on literary works from different periods and cultures, particularly English literature, American literature, and literary translation. William Blake, John Milton, William Faulkner, Henry James, and Yunus Emre were among the important figures she analyzed in her works. In addition, she translated numerous works, particularly those of T.S. Eliot, R. W. Emerson, Khalil Gibran, and John Gardner. She carried out research projects titled “The Relationship between Language and Values in Women’s Discourse” and “Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies” and conducted research abroad with scholarships from institutions such as Fulbright and USIS. Beyond her academic work, she served as a Senate member at Dokuz Eylül University and as the long-term Head of the Department of Western Languages and Literatures (American Culture and Literature). She has been a member of professional and academic organizations such as ESSE (European Society for the Study of English), IDEA (Association for the Study of English), and EAAS (European Association of American Studies).

 

Asst. Prof. Dr. Hatice Nuray ÖNDER

Asst. Prof. Dr. Hatice Nuray Önder completed her undergraduate studies in English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Social and Administrative Sciences, Hacettepe University in 1974. In 1988, she completed her master’s degree in American Literature at the Department of Western Languages and Literatures, Institute of Social Sciences, Ege University, and received her PhD in the same department and field in 1996. The same year, she began working as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Western Languages and Literatures (American Culture and Literature), Faculty of Letters, Dokuz Eylül University. Her research and teaching throughout her career have covered American History, the American government system, technology and literature, the American Novel, and Regional Literature. Between 2009–2012, she served as the Head of the Department of American Culture and Literature. Between 2013–2016, she was a member of the Faculty Board. Between 2000–2019, she taught courses in composition, English education, and TESOL at DESEM. She also served on the Faculty Scholarship Commission. She was actively involved in the Faculty Graduation Commission for many years, making significant contributions to the organization of graduation ceremonies. Since 2006, she has chaired the Izmir Turkish-American Association Book Club, a role she still continues.

Asst. Prof. Dr. İsmail Yavuz Bülent UĞRASIZ

Asst. Prof. Dr. İsmail Yavuz Bülent UĞRASIZ completed his undergraduate studies in Political Science and Public Administration at the Faculty of Administrative Sciences, Middle East Technical University in 1976, and his master’s degree in International Relations at the Faculty of Political Sciences, Ankara University in 1980. In 2002, he received his PhD from the Department of American Culture and Literature, Institute of Social Sciences, Dokuz Eylül University. In 2003, he started working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Western Languages and Literatures (American Culture and Literature), Faculty of Letters, Dokuz Eylül University. In 2004, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to support his academic studies. His research areas include Middle East policy, American foreign policy, Turkish-American relations, the American legal system, and Orientalism. He has taught key courses in the American Culture and Literature program such as Western Civilization, Turkish-American Relations, Special Topics in American History, and American Government and Constitution at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. He conducted a research project entitled “Realpolitik and Idealism: U.S. Policy Toward the Baku-Ceyhan Oil Pipeline: A Case Study.”

Prof. Dr. Ayşe Didem USLU

Prof. Dr. Ayşe Didem USLU completed her undergraduate studies in English Language and Literature at Hacettepe University in 1976. She earned her master’s degree in English Language and Literature from the Graduate School of Education (Institute of Social Sciences), Hacettepe University, in 1978. In 1981, she pursued her first doctoral studies at the Faculty of Languages, History, and Geography, Ankara University, as well as at Rijksuniversiteit te Leiden, Faculteit der Letteren. She completed her second PhD in 1988 at the Department of Theatre, Institute of Social Sciences, Dokuz Eylül University. In 1995, she was appointed as an Associate Professor in the Department of American Literature, Faculty of Science and Letters, Dokuz Eylül University, and was promoted to Full Professor in 2001. Prof. Dr. USLU has concentrated her academic research on American theatre and performance studies. She served as Head of the Department of Western Languages and Literatures (American Culture and Literature) at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Science and Letters, between 2005 and 2006, and as a member of the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Science and Letters between 1996 and 2001.

 

Department of Archaeology

Prof. Dr. Recep MERİÇ

Recep Meriç spent his childhood in Alaşehir and completed his high school education in Manisa. Between 1962–1967, he studied Classical Archaeology at Ankara University, Faculty of Language, History and Geography, where his professors included Ekrem Akurgal, Baki Öğün, and Yusuf Boysal. From 1964–1971, he worked as a trainee student and archaeologist in the Sardis American Excavation Committee under the direction of G. M. A. Hanfmann. Between 1969–1972, he served as a museum assistant at the Ephesus Museum. Later, with a doctoral scholarship provided by Hermann Vetters, he completed his PhD in Archaeology at the University of Vienna between 1972–1978.

In 1979–1980, with the Alexander von Humboldt scholarship awarded by R. Merkelbach and H. Engelman, he contributed to publication research on Anatolian Epigraphy and Historical Geography at the University of Cologne, Germany. After returning to Turkey in 1981, he briefly worked at Ege University, Faculty of Fine Arts, and in 1982, he joined Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Architecture, as the Head of the Department of Restoration.

He conducted long-term systematic excavations at Alaşehir–Philadelphia (1985–1993) and Torbalı–Metropolis (1989–2007). In 1999–2000, he was appointed to the Faculty of Science and Letters to establish the Department of Archaeology at Dokuz Eylül University, where he served as the founding chair until his retirement in 2007. He is currently a part-time faculty member at Yaşar University.

Prof. Dr. Meral AKURGAL

Prof. Dr. Meral Akurgal completed her primary and secondary education in Ankara, then earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Classical Archaeology at Ankara University, Faculty of Language, History and Geography, in 1972. She was awarded the title of Doctor of Letters and Associate Professor of Classical Archaeology at the same faculty.

She worked as an archaeologist-assistant at the Turkish Historical Society between 1976–1986, and as a faculty member and department chair at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Ceramics (1986–1999), and later at the Faculty of Science and Letters, Department of Archaeology (1999–2009).

She participated in several excavations, including Old Smyrna–Bayraklı (1972, 1976–1993), Erythrai (1977–1983), and the Lower Euphrates Project Köşkerbaba Excavation (1980). Between 1993–2013, she directed the excavations at Izmir/Smyrna as Head of Excavations. Since 1995, she has carried out restorations of major architectural monuments of the ancient city and highlighted Smyrna’s significance during the Archaic Period by uncovering the city walls and the city entrance on the eastern and southern parts of the mound.

Her research focuses on Archaic architecture and Corinthian and Orientalizing ceramics. She studied Archaic ceramics at Villa Giulia in Rome (1975, 1982) and at the National Museum of Athens (1982). She also took part in the Turkish-German-Austrian joint research project on the origins of Mycenaean, Geometric, and Archaic ceramics from the Eastern Aegean region, as well as in the TÜBİTAK and Izmir Metropolitan Municipality-supported project “Determining and Interpreting the Izmir Fault through Geophysical, Geological, Geomorphological, Seismological, Archaeological and Historical Data,” conducted with the Department of Geophysical Engineering at DEU Faculty of Engineering.

Prof. Dr. Akurgal is a correspondent member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute. She has acted as a referee for TÜBİTAK, various universities, and journals, and has presented at national and international symposiums, congresses, and colloquia in Turkey and abroad. She has authored more than 30 articles and 3 books.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet UHRİ

Born in Izmir in 1963, Ahmet Uhri graduated from the Faculty of Food Engineering at Ege University in 1986. In 1997, he completed his bachelor’s degree in Archaeology at the Faculty of Letters of the same university, where he also pursued his master’s and doctoral studies. He was awarded the title of Assistant Professor in September 2011. He continued his academic career at Dokuz Eylül University, Department of Archaeology, until his retirement in 2022.

He is the author of the books The Cultural History of Fire and Hittite Cuisine as an Experimental Archaeology Study. Together with Dr. Betül Öztürk of Izmir University of Economics, he co-authored the book EGE HERBS: The Culture and Recipes of Edible Herbs of the Aegean and Izmir, published by Izmir University of Economics Press, which received first prize at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2023. His earlier work, co-authored with Asuman Albayrak and Ülkü M. Solak, Hittite Cuisine as an Experimental Archaeology Study, won the first prize in the category of Best Culinary History Book at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in 2009.

Lect. Dr. Adviye ERBAY

Lect. Dr. Adviye Erbay completed her bachelor’s degree in 1989 at Hacettepe University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Philosophy. She received her master’s degree in 1993 and her PhD in 2000 at Hacettepe University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Philosophy. She began working at the Faculty of Letters on 27 October 2010. She retired from the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Letters, Dokuz Eylül University, on 30 June 2015.

Her academic work focused on the history of philosophy, epistemology, ethics, and metaphysics. She contributed to projects aimed at developing students’ philosophical thinking skills and conducted academic research. Throughout her career, she published many articles in scholarly journals. Some of her published works include: *Introduction to Philosophy and Basic Concepts*, *Knowledge and Reality: Epistemological Approaches*, and *Reflections on Ethics*.

Prof. Dr. R. Levent AYSEVER

Prof. Dr. Reşat Levent Aysever completed his bachelor’s degree at Hacettepe University, Department of Philosophy. He earned his master’s degree in 1988 and his doctorate in 1994 at Hacettepe University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Philosophy. His doctoral thesis, entitled The Problem of Meaning and John R. Searle’s Solution, made significant contributions to the fields of philosophy of language and epistemology.

He began his academic career at Hacettepe University and later continued at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Philosophy, where he became a professor. His research interests include the history of philosophy, philosophy of language, epistemology, ethics, and the history of Turkish thought.

During his career, he undertook various academic and administrative duties, teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He contributed to bringing philosophy beyond academia to society, especially through events such as Izmir Philosophy Days. At Dokuz Eylül University, he supervised 9 master’s theses.

Prof. Dr. Kubilay AYSEVENER

Prof. Dr. Kubilay Aysevener graduated from Ankara University, Faculty of Languages, History and Geography, Department of Philosophy in 1986 and began his master’s studies the same year. In 1987, he started working as a Research Assistant in the Department of Systematic Philosophy and Logic and completed his master’s thesis in 1989. In 1995, he received his PhD with the dissertation A Study on the Relationship between History and Philosophy in R. G. Collingwood.

He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor in 1997, became an Associate Professor in 2004, and a Professor in 2011. He established the Philosophy Departments at Ondokuz Mayıs University and Dokuz Eylül University. In the 2001–2002 academic year, he worked as a visiting scholar at National Chengchi University in Taiwan.

His research has primarily focused on the philosophy of history. He is the author of the books Collingwood’s Philosophy of History (2001) and Philosophy of History (2003, 2015). He has also published numerous articles in national peer-reviewed journals on the relationship between history and philosophy, historical knowledge and interpretation, and human–nature relations.

His professional memberships include the Turkish Philosophical Society (Executive Board Member, 1995–2001), the Association for Classical Studies, and the Turkish–Hungarian Friendship Association. Prof. Dr. Aysevener retired from Dokuz Eylül University in 2023.

His administrative duties included serving as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science and Letters at Ondokuz Mayıs University (2006–2008), Head of the Department of Philosophy at Ondokuz Mayıs University (2006–2009), Head of the Department of Philosophy at Dokuz Eylül University (2009–2010), and Dean of the Faculty of Letters at Dokuz Eylül University (2017).

Asst. Prof. Dr. Lütfiye Filiz Özbaş graduated in 1974 from Ankara University, Faculty of Languages, History and Geography, Department of English Language and Literature. She completed her Master’s degree in the same department in 1977 and received her PhD from Ankara University Institute of Social Sciences in 1990. In 1994, she began her academic career at Dokuz Eylül University, Buca Faculty of Education, as an Assistant Professor. Between 2002–2006, she served at various times as the Head of the Department of Translation and Interpreting. Within the scope of DEU Scientific Research Projects, she conducted a project entitled “Analysis of a Postcolonial Translation in the framework of Hans J. Vermeer’s Skopos Theory.”

Prof. Dr. Nafize Sibel GÜZEL

Prof. Dr. Nafize Sibel Güzel was born in Izmir in 1955. She completed her primary, secondary, and high school education in Izmir. After graduating from İzmir Girls’ High School, she finished her undergraduate studies in English Language Teaching at what was then İzmir Education Institute, now Dokuz Eylül University, and began teaching at a private school. During her time in Konya, due to marriage, she studied at Selçuk University Faculty of Letters, Department of English Language and Literature between 1980–84 as one of its first students, graduating as the top student. She later earned her Master’s degree in the same department and her PhD at Gazi University. Believing that foreign language teaching becomes more effective and enjoyable when combined with literary texts, she worked in areas such as Stylistics, Structuralism, Semiotics, and Contemporary Literary Theories. She taught courses on novel, poetry, literary theories, and criticism in the departments of English Language and Education, English Language and Literature, and Translation Studies at various universities.

She co-founded the Department of English Language and Literature at Celal Bayar University with the late Prof. Dr. Yüksel Uslu and chaired the department continuously between 2001–2015. She later chaired the Department of Translation and Interpreting at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Letters, for six years. In April 2020, partly due to challenges posed by the pandemic but mostly to pursue her passion for ceramics, she retired after 42 years of service.

She has two published books, numerous master’s and doctoral theses supervised, and several published articles.

Prof. Dr. Bayram Bayrakdar was born in Kayseri in 1952. He completed his secondary education at Sümer Secondary School in 1966/67 and graduated from Kayseri High School in 1969/70. Between 1970–1974, he studied at Ankara University, Faculty of Languages, History, and Geography, Department of Early Modern History. During this period, he took courses from Prof. Dr. Bekir Sıtkı Baykal on Historical Methodology, Renaissance and Reformation in Europe, the Thirty Years’ War, and the Philosophy of the Enlightenment Age; from Prof. Dr. Adnan Erzi on Ottoman Historical Sources, Fuat Köprülü and Ottoman History, an Analysis of Tacüt Tevarih, and Turkish Culture and Civilization; from Prof. Dr. Halil İnalcık on The Foundation of the Ottoman State, Studies and Documents on the Reign of Mehmed the Conqueror, and the Sanjak Register of Albania dated 835 AH; from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Arıkan on the Ottoman Military Organization in the Foundation Period; and from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yaşar Yücel on Turkey in the Beylik Period.

Between 1975–1982, he worked as a high school history teacher. In 1982, he began his academic career as a lecturer at Buca Faculty of Education. In 1985/86, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. İsmail Aka, he completed his master’s thesis titled “The Kuva-yi Milliye in Denizli and Its Region” at Ankara University, Institute of Turkish Revolution History. Between 1987–1991, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Salih Özbaran, he prepared his doctoral dissertation titled “The History of Ayvalık from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic” at Dokuz Eylül University, Institute of Turkish Revolution History.

He became an assistant professor in 1992, an associate professor in 1995, and a full professor in 2001. Between 2001–2010, he worked as a professor in the Department of History at Erciyes University. He conducted archival and library research in England, Estonia, and Germany. Between 2003–2005, he served as an academician at Ahmet Yesevi University in Kazakhstan, and between 2007–2008, he held the position of Acting Rector at the same university.

Between 2010–2019, he served as the Head of the Department of History and the founding Dean of the Faculty of Letters at Dokuz Eylül University. He also took part in various academic and administrative boards at the faculty and university level. On August 3, 2019, he retired due to the age limit.

 

Department of Linguistics

Prof. Dr. Semiramis YAĞCIOĞLU

Prof. Dr. Semiramis Yağcıoğlu was born in 1949. After completing her secondary education at Robert College (1967), she received her bachelor’s degree from Istanbul University, Department of English Language and Literature (1971).

She earned her Postgraduate Diploma in Linguistics from Newcastle Upon Tyne University, UK (1979), and her master’s (1987) and doctoral degrees (1992) from Ege University, Institute of Social Sciences.

Between 1972–1991, she worked as a lecturer at Ege University School of Foreign Languages, and between 1991–1996, as a lecturer and assistant professor in the Department of Western Languages and Literatures at Dokuz Eylül University. In 1996, she was awarded the title of associate professor in General Linguistics. In 2001, she was assigned to establish the Department of Linguistics at the same university, and in 2002 she was appointed as a full professor. She served as department head until her retirement in 2009.

Between 2002–2009, within the framework of the study “What Kind of Education Do We Want?” at Dokuz Eylül University, she contributed intellectually and practically to the adoption of an active education model that fosters problem-solving skills and the training of democratic individuals instead of rote learning.

She held various administrative positions such as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, member of the Faculty Board and the Faculty Administrative Board, member of the Institute of Social Sciences Administrative Board, and University Senator. She also supervised master’s and doctoral theses.

She conducted research at various universities in the USA, Austria, Germany, England, and Scotland.

Prof. Dr. Yağcıoğlu has worked extensively in the field of Critical Discourse Analysis. Her articles have been published in Dilbilim Araştırmaları, Discourse and Society, International Journal of Sociology of Language, Interactions, Journal of American Studies, and Dilbilim. She has presented papers at national and international symposia and congresses, acted as referee for various journals, and is an honorary member of the English Language and Research Association (IDEA).

She contributed as author and editor to books such as Different Discourses in the Secular and Anti-Secular Conflict after 1990: An Interdisciplinary Approach (2002), Advances in Turkish Linguistics: Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Turkish Linguistics (2006), and authored The Novel Hero and Subjectivity: Discourse, Ideology and Geography (2017, second edition in progress).

After retirement, she continues to publish articles on literary criticism regularly in various journals.

Prof. Dr. Lütfiye Oktar received her bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature from Boğaziçi University in 1973. She obtained her master’s degree in English Linguistics in 1985 and her doctoral degree in 1991, both from Ege University, Faculty of Letters, Department of English Language and Literature. In 1995, she was awarded the title of associate professor in General Linguistics, and in 2001 she became a full professor.

Between 1973–1979, she worked as a lecturer in English at Ege University School of Foreign Languages; between 1979–2000, she worked at the Department of English Language and Literature, Faculty of Letters, Ege University. From 2000–2008, she served at Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Letters as a founding faculty member of the Department of Linguistics. Between 2008–2018, she was the Head of the Department of Translation and Interpreting at Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, until her retirement.

Her research interests include Discourse Analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis, and Media Discourse. She has published numerous articles in national and international indexed journals and presented many papers at national and international symposia.

She graduated from Hacettepe University, Department of English Linguistics, in 1986. In 1989, she completed her master’s thesis titled “Language in Advertising” at Ege University, Department of English Language and Literature, and in 1996, she completed her doctoral dissertation titled “Universal Grammar in Second Language Acquisition” at Hacettepe University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Linguistics. In 2003, she received the title of Associate Professor in Linguistics at Dokuz Eylül University. In 2010, she completed her psychodrama training at the Ministry of Education Umut Psychodrama Institute with the thesis “Learning in Action: Teaching English to Disabled Students through Psychodrama.”

Between 1986–1994, she worked as an English lecturer at the School of Foreign Languages, Ege University; between 1994–2000, she worked as a faculty member at the Department of English Language and Literature, Ege University. Between 2000–2008, she served as Vice Chair of the Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Letters, Dokuz Eylül University, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and supervising master’s and doctoral theses. Between 2009–2013, she worked part-time at Izmir University of Economics, in both the School of Foreign Languages Teacher Training Unit and the Department of Translation and Interpreting. From 2011–2015, she directed the Teacher Training Unit at International House Language School. Courses she taught included Introduction to Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Discourse Analysis, Text Analysis, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, Pragmatics, Teaching English as a Foreign Language, Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language, Foreign Language Teaching Material Development, Effective Communication Methods for Teachers, and Classroom Management.

Since 2019, she has been working independently at ACD Foreign Language Consultancy, teaching Business English, Academic Writing in English, IELTS, TOEFL, and English Speaking, and serving as a CELTA teacher trainer. She also volunteers to teach English to disabled individuals at the Association for Tourism for All and to students over the age of 60 at Ege University’s Refreshment University.

Prof. Dr. Doğan Günay was born in 1957 in Gülnar, Mersin. After primary and secondary school, he graduated from Edirne Boys’ Teacher High School in 1976. He completed his undergraduate studies in the French Department of Ankara Gazi Higher Teacher Training School in 1982. He earned his master’s degree at Cumhuriyet University and his doctoral degree at Hacettepe University.

He became an Assistant Professor in 1994, Associate Professor in Linguistics in 1999, and Professor in 2005.

In addition to nearly one hundred national and international articles, papers, conferences, and panels published in the fields of text analysis, linguistics, and discourse analysis, he has authored books such as Göstergebilim Yazıları (2002), Dil ve İletişim (2nd ed., 2013), Biçimbirimler. Türetim ve İşletim Ardıllarının Sözlü Dildeki Kullanım Sıklığı (2014), Kültürbilime Giriş. He also co-edited works such as Studies on Teaching Turkish (2011), Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Turkish Language Teaching (2011), Visual Semiotics: The Interpretation of Images (2013), and Essays in Honor of Zeynel Kıran (2014), along with five other co-authored books. He continues his research for new publications.
