Prof. Dr. Azize M. ÖZGÜVEN completed her undergraduate studies at Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters, Department of English Language and Literature in 1965 and received her PhD in 1975. In 1981, she started her academic studies as an Assistant Professor. She became an associate professor in 1987 and then a professor in 1995. During her years at the university, she has served as a master’s and/or Doctoral thesis advisor to many esteemed faculty members, including Prof. Nilsen Gökçen Uluk, Assoc. Prof. Füsun Çoban Döşkaya, Assoc. Prof. Evrim Ersöz Koç, Asst. Prof. Leman Giresunlu, Lect. Hakan Dibel from Dokuz Eylül University, Department of American Culture and Literature. During academic career, she has worked extensively on literary works from different periods and cultures. Among these, English literature, American literature and literary translations stand out. Prof. Dr. ÖZGÜVEN’s studies on William Blake, John Milton, William Faulkner, Henry James, and Yunus Emre are among the important names she has analyzed in her works. In addition to these, she has translated the works of significant authors such as T.S. Eliot, R. W. Emerson, Halil Cibran and John Gardner. She has carried out research projects titled “Kadın Söylemi içerisinde Dil ve Değerler İlişkisi” and “Karşılaştırmalı Edebiyat ve Kültürel Çalışmalar” and has conducted research and studies abroad with scholarships from Fulbright and USIS. In addition to her academic work, Prof. Dr. ÖZGÜVEN served as a member of the Dokuz Eylül University Senate and for many years as the Head of the Department of Western Languages and Literature (American Culture and Literature) at Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Science and Letters. She is a member of scientific and professional organizations such as ESSE (European Society for the Study of English), IDEA (Association for the Study of English Language and Literature), EAAS (European Association of American Studies).
Asst. Prof. Hatice Nuray Önder graduated from Hacettepe University, Faculty of Social and Administrative Sciences, Department of English Language and Literature in 1974. In 1988, she completed her master’s degree at Ege University Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Western Languages and Literature, American Literature, and received her PhD degree in the same institution in 1996. In the same year, she began her career as an Assistant Professor at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Science and Letters, Department of Western Languages and Literature (American Culture and Literature). Asst. Prof. ÖNDER’s research and lectures throughout her working life includes the fields of American History, American government system, technology and literature, American Novel and Regional Literature. Between 2009-2012, she served as the Head of the Department of American Culture and Literature. Between 2013-2016, she was a member of the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Letters. From 2000 to 2019, she taught English composition, English Language, and English TESOL courses at DESEM. She served on the Faculty Scholarship Commission and the Faculty Graduation Commission for many years and made significant contributions to the organization of graduation ceremonies. Since 2006, she has been the president of the Izmir Turkish-American Association Book Club.
Asst. Prof. İsmail Yavuz Bülent UĞRASIZ graduated from Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Administrative Sciences, Department of Political Science and Public Administration in 1976 and he completed his master’s degree in Ankara University, Faculty of Political Sciences, Department of International Relations in 1980. In 2002, he received his PhD degree from Dokuz Eylül University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of American Culture and Literature. In 2003, UĞRASIZ started his career as an Assistant Professor at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Science and Letters, Department of Western Languages and Literature (American Culture and Literature). In 2004, he received a Fulbright Scholarship to support his academic studies. Asst. Prof. UĞRASIZ’s research interests include Middle East politics, American foreign policy, Turkish-American relations, the American legal system, and Orientalism. He has taught courses such as Western Civilization, Turkish-American Relations, Special Topics in American History, American Government and Constitution, which have an important place in the American Culture and Literature Curriculum at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. Asst. Prof. UĞRASIZ conducted a research project titled “Realpolitik and Idealism: US Policy Toward the Baku-Ceyhan Oil Pipeline: A Case Study.”
Prof. Dr. Ayşe Didem USLU completed her undergraduate education at Hacettepe University, Department of English Language and Literature in 1976. She completed her master’s degree in English Language and Literature at Hacettepe University, Faculty of Postgraduate Education (Institute of Social Sciences) in 1978. In 1981, she received her first doctorate education at Ankara University Faculty of Language and History-Geography and Rijks Universiteit Te Leiden Faculteid Der Letteren, and in 1988 she completed her second doctorate education at Dokuz Eylül University Institute of Social Sciences Department of Theater. In 1995, she became an associate professor at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Science and Letters, Department of American Literature and in 2001 she became a professor. Prof. Dr. USLU has focused her academic studies on American theater and stage studies. she served as the Head of the Department of Western Languages and Literature (American Culture and Literature) at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Science and Letters between 2005-2006, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Science and Letters between 1996-2001.
Recep Meriç had spent his childhood in Alaşehir. He received his high school education in Manisa. He studied Classical Archaeology at the Faculty of Language, History and Geography in Ankara between 1962 and 1967, and his professors were Ekrem Akurgal, Baki Öğün and Yusuf Boysal. Between 1964 and 1971, he participated in the Sart American Excavation Committee under the direction of G. M. A. Hanfmann as a intern student and archaeologist. He worked as a museum assistant at the Ephesus Museum between 1969-1972 and then completed his doctorate in archaeology at the University of Vienna between 1972-1978 with a doctoral scholarship provided by Hermann Vetters. In 1979-1980, with the Alexander von Humboldt scholarship provided by R. Merkelbach and H. Engelman, he contributed to publication research on Anatolian Epigraphy and Historical Geography at the University of Cologne, Germany. He returned to Turkey in 1981 and worked briefly at Ege University, Faculty of Fine Arts, and after 1982 at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Architecture, as the head of the Department of Restoration. He conducted long-term and systematic excavations at Alaşehir – Philadelphia between 1985-1993 and Torbalı – Metropolis between 1989-2007. In 1999-2000, he was appointed to the Faculty of Science and Letters to establish the Department of Archaeology at Dokuz Eylul University and served as the founding chairman until his retirement in 2007. He is currently working as a part-time academic member at Yaşar University.
Prof. Dr. Meral Akurgal completed her primary and secondary education in Ankara, and she received her bachelor’s and then master’s degrees in Classical Archaeology from Ankara University, Faculty of Language, History and Geography in 1972. She received the title of Doctor of Letters and Associate Professor of Classical Archaeology at A.U. Faculty of Language and History Geography. Prof. Dr. Akurgal worked as an archaeologist-assistant at the Turkish Historical Society between 1976-1986, as an academic member and department head at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Ceramics between 1986-1999 and at the Faculty of Science and Letters, Department of Archaeology between 1999-2009.
Meral Akurgal, who participated in the 1972, 1976-1993 Old Smyrna-Bayraklı, 1977-1983 Erythrai, 1980 Lower Euphrates Project Köşkerbaba Excavations as a member, continued the excavations of Izmir/Smyrna as the Head of Excavations between 1993-2013.
Since 1995, he has carried out restorations on important architectural monuments of the ancient city and revealed the significance of Smyrna in the Archaic Period by excavating the city walls of Smyrna and the city entrance in the east and south of the site.
Meral Akurgal, whose specialty is Archaic architecture and Corinthian and Orientalist ceramics, studied Archaic ceramics at Villa Guilia in Rome in 1975 and 1982 and at the National Museum of Athens in 1982. She participated in the Turkish-German-Austrian joint research project on the origin of Mycenaean, Geometric and Archaic ceramics from the Eastern Aegean Region; and in the project called “İzmir Fayının Jeofizik, Jeolojik, Jeomorfolojik, Sismolojik, Arkeolojik ve Tarihsel Veriler Yardımıyla Belirlenmesi ve Yorumlanması” supported by the Department of Geophysical Engineering of DEU Faculty of Engineering, TUBITAK and Izmir Metropolitan Municipality.
Meral Akurgal, who is a correspondent member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute, has served as a referee for TÜBİTAK, various universities and journals, participated in national and international symposiums, congresses and colloquiums in Turkey and abroad and organized conferences. She has published more than 30 national and international articles and 3 books.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Lütfiye Filiz Özbaş graduated from Ankara University, Faculty of Language, History and Geography, Department of English Language and Literature in 1974. In 1977, she graduated from Ankara University, Faculty of Language, History and Geography, Department of English Language and Literature Master’s Program and in 1990, she received her PhD degree from Ankara University, Institute of Social Sciences. In 1994, she started her academic studies at Dokuz Eylül University Buca Faculty of Education as Assistant Professor. She served as the Head of the Department of Translation and Interpreting for various periods between 2002-2006. She has a project titled “Analysis of a Postcolonial Translation in the framework of Hans J. Vermeer’s Skopos Theory.” within the scope of DEU Scientific Research Projects.
Prof. Dr. Nafize Sibel GÜZEL was born in Izmir in 1955. She completed her primary, secondary and high school education in Izmir. After İzmir Girls’ High School, she graduated from 9 Eylül University, then known as Izmir Institute of Education, Department of English Language Teaching and started teaching in a private school. During the years she was in Konya due to her marriage in 1980-84, she was one of the first students of Selçuk University, Faculty of Letters, Department of English Language and Literature and graduated from the department with the highest ranking. She completed her master’s degree in the same department and her PhD at Gazi University. Since she believed that foreign language education is much more efficient and enjoyable with literary texts, she worked on teaching Stylistics, Structuralism and Semiotics and Contemporary Literary Theories. She taught novel, poetry, literary theories and criticism in the departments of English Language and Education, English Language and Literature, Translation Studies at various universities.
She founded the Department of English Language and Literature at Celal Bayar University Faculty of Letters with the late Prof. Dr. Yüksel USLU and served as the head of the department between 2001-2015. After serving as the head of the Department of Translation and Interpreting at Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Letters for six years, she retired in April 2020 after 42 years, partly due to the problems caused by the pandemic and mostly in order to continue her hobby of ceramics. Since her two published books, theses she supervised, published articles, foreign scholarships she received, lectures she gave as a guest academic member, and presentations she made can be viewed from her YÖKSİS resume, it is not deemed necessary to repeat them here.

I was born in Kayseri in 1952. I graduated from Sümer Secondary School in 1966/67 and Kayseri High School in 1969/70. I studied at the Department of Early Modern History at the Faculty of Language and History-Geography during 1970/74. I took the courses of History Methodology, Renaissance and Reform in Europe, 30 Years Wars and philosophical history of the Age of Enlightenment from Prof. Dr. Bekir Sıtkı Baykal, Ottoman Historical Sources, Fuat Köprülü and Ottoman History, Analysis of Tacüt Tevarih, Turkish Culture and Civilization from Prof. Dr. Adnan Erzi. From Prof. Dr. Halil İnalcık, I took the courses on the Issue of the Foundation of the Ottoman State, studies and documents on the Fatih Period, and the Albanian Sanjak Record Book dated 835. I took courses on the Ottoman Army Organization in the Foundation Period from Assoc. Prof. Muzaffer Arıkan and on Beylik Period of Turkey from Assoc. Prof. Yaşar Yücel. Each of these academic members were highly distinguished individuals with international reputations in their respective fields.
I worked as a history teacher in high schools between 1975-82. And I worked as a lecturer at Buca Faculty of Education in 1982.
I completed my master’s thesis titled Denizli and the Region Kuva-yi Milliye in 1985/86 at Ankara University Principals of Atatürk and Revolution History Institute under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. İsmail Aka. It was an original study based on the ATASE Archive. In 1987/91, I completed my PhD thesis titled Ayvalık History from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, which is a local and national history study, at Dokuz Eylül University Principals of Atatürk and Revolution History Institute under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Salih Özbaran. I worked as Assistant Professor in 1992/95, Associate Professor in 1995, and Professor in the Department of History at Erciyes University in 2001/2010. I conducted archival and historical research in archives and libraries in England, Estonia and Germany. I worked as an academic member at AYU in Kazakhstan in 2003/2005 and as Acting Rector at Ahmet Yesevi University in 2007/2008. During 2010/2019, I served as the Head of the Department of History and founding dean at DEU, Faculty of Letters. During this period, I served as a member of the Faculty and University Academic and Administrative Board. On August 3, 2019, I retired because of the retirement age.
Prof. Dr. Semiramis Yağcıoğlu was born in 1949. After graduating from Robert College (1967), she received her BA degree in English Language and Literature from Istanbul University (1971). She received her Postgraduate Diploma in Linguistics from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, England (1979). She completed Master’s (1987) and PhD (1992) degrees from Ege University, Institute of Social Sciences.
Between 1972 and 1991, she worked as a lecturer at Ege University School of Foreign Languages, and between 1991 and 1996, she worked as a lecturer and assistant professor at Dokuz Eylül University, Department of Western Languages and Literatures. In 1996, she received the title of Associate Professor in the field of Linguistics. In 2001, she was assigned to establish the Department of Linguistics at the same university. In 2002, she received the professor title in the same department. In 2009, Prof. Dr. Yağcıoğlu served as the head of the department until her voluntary retirement.
Between 2002-2009, she contributed to the active education model adopted at Dokuz Eylül University within the framework of “What kind of education do we want?” in order to contribute to the growth of problem-solving and democratic individuals. Prof. Dr. Yağcıoğlu served as Vice Dean of Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Science and Letters, a member of the Faculty Board and Board of Directors, a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Social Sciences and a Senator. She supervised master’s and doctoral theses. She conducted studies at various universities in the USA, Austria, Germany, England and Scotland. Prof. Dr. Yağcıoğlu’s articles on Critical Discourse Analysis have been published in Dilbilim Araştırmaları, Discourse and Society, International Journal of Sociology of Language, Interactions, Journal of American Studies and Dilbilim journals. She participated in national and international symposiums and congresses. She served as a referee in various journals. She is an honorary member of the English Language and Research Association (IDEA). She authored and edited the chapters of 1990 sonrası Laik ve Anti-Laik Çatışmasında Farklı Söylemler: Disiplinlerarası Bir Yaklaşım (2002) and Advances in Turkish Linguistics: Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Turkish Linguistics (2006). The second edition of her book Roman Kahramanı ve Öznellik: Söylem İdeoloji ve Coğrafya (2017) is in progress. After her retirement, her articles on literary criticism have been published regularly in various journals.
Lütfiye Oktar received BA degree in English Language and Literature from Boğaziçi University, Department of English Language and Literature in 1973. She completed her MA in English Linguistics in 1985 from Ege University, Faculty of Letters, Department of English Language and Literature and her PhD in English Linguistics in 1991 from Ege University, Faculty of Letters, Department of English Language and Literature. Lütfiye Oktar became an associate professor in General Linguistics in 1995 and a professor in 2001. Lütfiye Oktar worked as an English lecturer at Ege University School of Foreign Languages between 1973 and 1979 and at Ege University Faculty of Letters, Department of English Language and Literature between 1979 and 2000. From 2000 to 2008, Lütfiye Oktar continued her career as a founding faculty member at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Linguistics. After serving as the Head of the Department of Translation and Interpreting at Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Science and Letters between 2008-2018, Oktar retired. Lütfiye Oktar’s research interests include Discourse Analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis, Media Discourse. She has several articles published in national and international indexed journals in these fields and numerous papers presented in national and international symposiums.
In 1986, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cem-Değer graduated from Hacettepe University, Department of English Linguistics. In 1989, she completed her master’s thesis titled “Language in Advertising” at Ege University, Department of English Language and Literature, and completed her PhD thesis titled “Universal Grammar in Second Language Acquisition” at Hacettepe University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Linguistics in 1996.
