The mission of our faculty is to educate scholars who grasp the requirements of the era, think in a versatile way, have a sense of responsibility towards society, foster productivity, collaborate effectively and follow innovations. The vision of our faculty is to become a pioneering institution that produces high-quality research at the international level, educates rational and innovative scholars, and shapes the future of our country.
The Faculty of Letters was established in the 1991-1992 academic year under the name of “Faculty of Science and Letters”. Our faculty, which had only the Department of American Culture and Literature at the time of its establishment, achieved significant development with the establishment of the Department of Translation and Interpreting in 1995, the Departments of History and Linguistics in 1998, and the Department of Archaeology in 1999. Following the establishment of Philosophy, Sociology, and Psychology departments in the next years, it became necessary to establish a separate faculty within the Science and Letters. At the end of the reconstruction process initiated in 2010, the Faculty of Science and Letters was transformed into two separate faculties on June 30, 2010. Along with the departments mentioned above, the Departments of Museum Studies, Comparative Literature, Turkish Language and Literature, and Russian Language and Literature were also established and started their educational activities. In total, there are 12 departments within our faculty, 30 administrative staff and 158 academic staff, 80 of whom are faculty members. The Departments of History, Archaeology, and Sociology offer formal and evening education programs at the undergraduate level. Furthermore, 356 students from the Foundation Universities that were closed by the Decree Law No. 667 were placed as special students in the Departments of Psychology, Turkish Language and Literature, and Sociology. Our students are also offered the opportunity to benefit from double major and minor programs.
